Better Living Through Chemistry: The Ethical Care and Feeding of Your Local Psychiatric Prescribers – Insights, Controversies, Dialogue and Everything You Wanted to Know

Dr. Chrisitna Vento is a NM prescribing psychologist who  began prescribing medications in 2008 at the  NM Behavioral Health Institute at Las Vegas after practicing as a clinical psychologist for seven years. She is a former Training Director of the NMSU Post Doctoral Master’s in Clinical Psychopharmacology program and a  consulting subject matter expert sharing responsibility for revising and updating the national qualification examination for prescribing psychologists known as the PEP. Her practice has ranged from primary care clinics, community mental health centers, and the Indian Health Service, treating adults and adolescents  with medications and integrated solution focused psychotherapeutic interventions. In 2020, she received the American Psychological Association’s Major Carveo Award from Division 55 recognising outstanding public service for prescribing psychologists.

She presents trainings to colleagues locally and regionally on applied practice, diversity and ethical issues around best practices for prescribing medications.  Believing that accomplished mental health professionals have already had far too many slides read to them,  she utilizes an informal style that encourages active participation, moments of uproarious laughter and thought-provoking questions.

The Grief Center of New Mexico provides free support groups for young people ages 3+ as well as adults grieving the death of a person important to them.

The Grief Center is located in the Center for Hope and Healing, a large, purpose-designed space with training and support group rooms for rent.

The Bernalillo County Department of Behavioral Health Services began operation of the CARE Campus Crisis Stabilization Unit in December 2019 to address a gap in crisis supports on the behavioral health continuum. Services provide stabilization supports for individuals with a mental health and/or co-occurring disorder who are experiencing a behavioral health crisis and are in need of short-term, 24/7 support but do not meet criteria for inpatient hospitalization. To date, the Crisis Stabilization Unit has served well over 190 community members.

As part of May Mental Health Awareness Month, the county announces the expansion of individuals who may be referred to the Crisis Stabilization Unit; now accepting referrals from providers throughout the community, to include hospitals, clinics, out-patient programs, and community mental health providers. Since the inception of the program, it has been the intention of the department to expand referrals are pleased to meet this goal.  The Crisis Stabilization Unit is licensed through New Mexico Department of Health and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.

The Crisis Stabilization Unit accepts referrals 7 am – 7 pm, 7 days a week.

“Crisis Stabilization can provide an intermediate step between Psychiatric Inpatient and outpatient services. It also provides services to individuals in crisis who are not best served by an inpatient program but who nonetheless need supports in order to prevent further debilitation due to lack of resources. We are building a more efficient network of care which meets the needs of individuals and complements the existing supports in the community. By expanding our referrals, we can use what we have learned in the past 18 months to broaden our reach and support individuals who are in need,” says Dr. Marcia Harris, Assistant Director, Bernalillo County Department of Behavioral Health Services
